Another early start today, leaving the villa at 5.15am, then driving thru Montalcino and back to the villa via Castiglione d’Orcia…

Castiglione d'Orcia

On the way, aroun 6.20am, I met an 82 year old Italian, who had been cycling most of his life, he was smiling all the time. Great character.

On Sunday, we went to visit a few vineyards in Montalcino: Fanti & Poggio Antico, and we found a nice driver, Alessandro to drive us (6 people) around for the whole day while wine tasting. He also owns a wine shop in Montalcino. Contact him here.

I bought this bottle for my dad at Christmas, and he decided to open it the next day to try it. Far from being corked, it was just a bit flat, past its prime.

While on our wine tasting trip, we stayed at Château Real, a stately home in a quiet village north of St Estephe, for three nights. We got a delightful bedroom with a private terrace overlooking the vineyards, and the owners: Patrick & Violaine were great hosts. They also offer dinner in the evening (table d’hôtes), cook and dine at the table with the other guests.

Various châteaux

The wine from this château is well known in my family, first my uncle then my dad have been great admirers of Château Haut-Marbuzet and Chambert Marbuzet. The visit was great and the tasting was varied, we also tried & bought the new wine from Mr Duboscq: Château Layauga-Duboscq 2005 cuvée Renaissance.

This château was definitely more modern and commercial that the previous one, the tasting was interesting… We tried the Lynch-Bages 2001 as well as the Haut Bages Averous (2nd wine) 2001.

We visited this château at 9:30am on Friday… First visit of the day. We also visited the gardens, full of roses. The place was great, charged with history, and an eye opener into wine making. Our guide was very knowledgeable and nice. We ended up tasting a Leoville Barton and a Langoa Barton 2006.

After shooting my last wedding in March, I had stayed the night at the Crown & Castle hotel in Orford. At the restaurant, I ordered one bottle of this great wine. So good that I have just ordered a case of 12 bottles. This ahead of a trip to the Bordeaux region, where I shall visit the Léoville-Barton, Lynch-Bages & Haut Marbuzet wine estates.
